    Tour of Northern Area with Father

    My father had been Inspector of Courts since 1938, and was appointed Chief Alkali in February, 1943. In April, 1944, he scheduled a six-week tour of courts in the northern parts of Adamawa Province, which extended from Girei to Madagali. He accepted my request to accompany him but insisted I returned by 1st May, since I was to depart for Kano early that month when he was still on the tour. The entourage was to travel on foot, except for my father, who would ride on horseback. Apart from the two of us, there were two police officers, four carriers, one who took care of the horse, and three members of our household. We left Yola for Girei, a distance of about fifteen miles. At Girei, we were the guests of a Native Authority messenger named Salimu.

    The next morning, which was April 4, 1944, my father showed me his work schedule during the tour, which included inspection of civil and criminal case records, cash books, receipts and warrants, and compilation of details of convicted and remanded persons.
