Several years ago I was asked to give a speech at a disability fair for several hundred high school children with various disabilities and I was resolved to be inspirational.
Mainly because I remembered that being a teenager was the absolute pits and if you had a disability on top of that, then life at school was an endurance test. I really wanted those kids to come out after my speech with fire in their bellies to rout out everything that was wrong with their world.
I dressed in my most fashionable clothes (to show that we too can be well dressed) sat on the stage with the other worthies and watched the massive auditorium slowly fill up. Slow being the operative word, being a complex tactical operation catering for everyone's disability in one big go. The wheelchair users were first in, occupying pride of place down the front. The blind were led in file edging their way between rows and rows of seats. The deaf were a windstorm of hands as they horsed all over the place, and then there were the carers, families, and teachers who looked exhausted.
