John McDonald, president of the Henry Ford College’s full-time faculty union Local 1650, has passed away. John was president of our Local for over 40 years, an activist in the Dearborn community, and a state and national leader for Union workers in education.
John was also my friend and mentor, as he was for many of my fellow faculty who grew up, learned our jobs, and fought for our Union and college under his tutelage. His loss signals a foundational change at our college, as usually happens when one of the cornerstones of an institution is removed.
John began teaching English at Henry Ford Community College in 1969. Soon after his arrival, he got involved in the Local 1650 during a particularly difficult labor conflict. This early experience led John to reconsider his career path and dedicate his life to the cause of unionism. John became President of Local 1650 in 1978 and he continued on as President until December 2021. In addition to his local duties, John has served concurrently as a Vice-President for AFT Michigan and as a Vice President for AFT National for 10 years, as well as serving on numerous college committees, the Dearborn Rotary Foundation, and on multiple political campaigns.
